Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about joining Gainsborough Badminton Club? 🏸

We know coming along to a new club for the first time can feel a little daunting, so we’ve answered some of the questions we get asked most often.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Just get in touch — we’re a friendly bunch!

Do I need to be an experienced badminton player?

Not at all!

Gainsborough Badminton Club is a social badminton club and all abilities are welcome. Whether you play regularly, haven’t picked up a racket for years, or are relatively new to badminton, you’re welcome to join us.

Our main aim is simple: play, have fun, stay active and meet people

Is there an age limit?

Yes. Our club sessions are currently for adults aged 18 and over.

When & Where are the sessions?

We play at West Lindsey Leisure Centre in Gainsborough.

We currently play:
Tuesday — 7pm to 9pm
Thursday — 7pm to 9pm

Sessions need to be booked in advance through Spond.

How Much Does it cost?

Sessions cost £4 per person.

Gainsborough Badminton Club is run as a not-for-profit social club. Session fees help cover the costs of running the club, including court hire, shuttlecocks, insurance, equipment and other club expenses.

Any surplus or profit generated by the club will be reinvested back into the club and its members — whether that’s through new equipment, additional courts, social events or other improvements that benefit our members.

How do I book a session?

Once you’ve joined the club, you’ll be given access to our Spond group.

Upcoming Tuesday and Thursday sessions are listed there, and you can book and pay for your place through the app.

Places are limited, so we recommend booking early

Do I need to register before coming along?

Yes please.

We ask everyone to register with the club before attending their first session. This makes sure we have the information we need and helps us manage sessions safely.

You can register here.

What should I wear?

There’s no special club kit required.

Just wear comfortable sports clothing and suitable indoor trainers. We’d also recommend bringing a drink — two hours of badminton can get surprisingly energetic!

Is the club competitive?

Our focus is social badminton rather than league or competitive play.

There’ll naturally be some competitive games — nobody likes losing 15–14! — but the emphasis is on enjoying badminton, meeting people and getting everyone involved.

How do the games work?

We mix players around throughout the evening rather than having fixed pairs.

You’ll get the opportunity to play with and against different people, which keeps the sessions social and helps everyone get to know each other.

Games are generally played to 15 points so that we can keep the courts moving and give everyone plenty of court time.

Can I just play with my friend or partner?

You can absolutely come along together, but we don’t operate permanent pairings.

Part of the club’s social approach is rotating players and partners throughout the session.
It means nobody gets left out and you’ll quickly get to know the rest of the club.

You can absolutely come along together, but we don’t operate permanent pairings.

Will I be playing for the whole two hours?

Not continuously.

We have a rotation system so everyone gets regular games while also having opportunities to sit out, grab a drink and recover between matches.

With only two courts, managing the rotation fairly helps everyone get a good amount of badminton during the evening.

What if I’ve booked and can no longer attend?

We understand that plans change!.

If you can no longer attend a session, please cancel your place in Spond as soon as possible. This releases your space and gives another member the opportunity to book.

Unfortunately, we’re unable to issue refunds through Spond due to limitations with the booking system.

However, you won’t lose your payment. If you’ve already paid and can no longer attend, we’re happy to transfer your payment to your next booked session.

Just get in touch with us and we’ll sort it for you. 🏸

Do you provide shuttlecocks?

Yes!

Shuttlecocks are provided by the club, so you don’t need to bring your own.

What sort of atmosphere can I expect?

Friendly, relaxed and social.

We’re building a club where people can enjoy badminton without taking things too seriously. There’ll be different abilities, different personalities and probably a fair bit of laughter along the way.

The most important thing is that everyone feels welcome.
